The Spotted Lanternfly: An Invasive Species

Spotted lanternflies are extremely invasive insects that feed on various host plants, including grapes, fruit trees, and hardwood trees. They cause serious damage to these plants. Some examples are leaf curling, oozing sap, and dieback in trees, crops, etc. Spotted Lanternflies are known for their distinctive appearance, featuring grayish wings with black spots and a vibrant red lower wing. Despite their striking appearance, these insects seriously threaten agriculture and ecosystems. The Spotted Lanternflies cause harm to the crops which in turn, causes harm to the economy and the production of these crops.

To stop the spread of these pesky flies, you will need to know what they look like. Adult Spotted Lanternflies are about one inch long and half an inch wide. They have a distinct shape, with wings that are grayish with black spots when at rest, and red with black spots when in flight. The Spotted Lanternfly nymphs have several stages of markings and colorings. They are smaller and have black bodies with white spots and red patches. Spotted Lanterflies are very easy to spot as they have skinny black legs and usually are at rest. The nymphs are known to jump, so be wary when going to stomp on them.
