A “tree professional” is most accurately described as an International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) certified arborist. That individual is a highly trained specialist in the art and science of planting, caring for, and maintaining woody plants. These are the “doctors” of the tree world.

The Tree Professional Commitment

Tree professionals focus on the long-term health, safety, and structural integrity of trees. They are defined by their commitment to arboriculture – the science of caring for trees.

In practice this is what the term truly means:

  • Arborist: Tree professionals specialize in diagnosing, treating, and managing tree health, identifying insect and disease issues as well as structural weaknesses in trees.
  • Scientific Knowledge: Tree professionals understand tree biology, soil science, and pruning techniques. They do not just cut; they know why, where, and how to cut. Thus ensuring that trees are not damaged.
  • Safety Expert: Tree professionals are trained to perform dangerous work, such as removing large trees or branches near homes and power lines, with minimal risk to themselves and to property.
  • ISA Certification: Tree professionals hold a certification from the ISA, which requires at least three years of experience and passing a rigorous exam covering tree biology, diagnosis, and safety. Certifications are maintained through continuing education.
  • Comprehensive Service: Tree professionals have a wide ranging skill set, including planting, pruning, soil amendments, insect & disease identification and treatment, root collar excavation, bracing/cabling, tree risk assessment, as well as tree removals.

When to Hire a Tree Professional?

Hiring a tree professional protects your property value and prevents expensive, dangerous mistakes. Tree professionals prioritize overall tree health and safety over just tree removals. For example, they will never use climbing spikes for pruning (which create wounds) and will often suggest cabling and bracing to save a structural limb rather than cutting it off. Additionally, tree professionals do not subscribe to the practice of topping trees, where a tree’s main canopy is drastically reduced.

When hiring a tree professional, ensure they have:

  • Proof of Insurance: Liability insurance and workers’ compensation are non-negotiable for high-risk work.
  • Specific Credentials: Look for the ISA Certified Arborist Seal and Tree Care Industry Association Accreditation.
  • Written Estimates: These should include a detailed scope of work and a clear cleanup plan.
